Raf Tarnawski urodził  się we Wrocławiu. 

Jego pierwszą pasją była fotografia. Mając 10 lat zrobił pierwsze zdjęcia. Następnie zaczął interesować się rysunkiem i grafiką. Swoją pierwszą indywidualną wystawę grafiki (głównie autoportrety rysowane piórkiem) miał będąc jeszcze w liceum w Wałbrzychu. Pod koniec lat siedemdziesiątych przeniósł się do Lund w Szwecji, gdzie ukończył z szkołę projektowania graficznego. Przez następne lata zajmował się fotografią, grafiką, ilustracją i reklamą pracując jako Creativ Director w międzynarodowych agencjach reklamowych. Pod koniec lat osiemdziesiątych miał pierwszą indywidualną wystawę swoich prac malarskich w Eslov (Szwecja). 

W 2006 roku rozpoczął studia jako wolny słuchacz w pracowni rzeźby u prof. P. Wrony na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie.

Od tego czasu prezentował swoje prace rzeźbiarskie na indywidualnych i zbiorowych wystawach w Polsce, Niemczech, Francji, Tajwanie, Włoszech, Szwecji I USA.

Głównym tematem jego prac jest kobieta. Na początku stosował klasyczne techniki pracując w glinie, gipsie i brązie. Z czasem zaczął łączyć różne materiały (sznurek, szkło, nylon, żywicę, metal) szukając własnych technik na  osiągnięcie pożądanych efektów. Raf Tarnawski wykorzystuje szeroką gamę materiałów aby przekazać charakter portretowanych postaci. Sztukę traktuje jako formę komunikacji. Uniwersalnej komunikacji na wyższym poziomie. Na poziomie estetyki i piękna – tej eterycznej substancji, która jest podstawą istnienia tego wszechświata i nadaje sens naszemu życiu.

Swoje rzeźby traktuje jak naczynia, które napełnia emocjami i pragnieniami: radością spotkania, ciepłem zachodzącego słońca, czy tęsknotą za tym, co mogłoby być. Zawsze jest w nich jakaś cząstka jego samego, jakiś kawałek jego życia. Każda z nich jest odzwierciedleniem jego subiektywnych wspomnień i doznań. Prezentując zatrzymany w nich czas i emocje, zaprasza do innego wymiaru, do strefy wolnej od chaosu galopującej rzeczywistości. Daje nam szansę na odnalezienie harmonii i odzyskania dystansu do otaczającego nas świata.

Raf Tarnawski was born in Wrocław, Poland.

His first passion was photography. At the age of 10, he took his first photographs. Later, he became interested in drawing and graphic design. While still in high school in Wałbrzych, he held his first solo exhibition featuring graphics, primarily pen-drawn self-portraits. In the late 1970s, he moved to Lund, Sweden, where he graduated from a school of graphic design. Over the following years, he worked in photography, graphic design, illustration, and advertising, serving as Creative Director in international advertising agencies. In the late 1980s, he held his first solo painting exhibition in Eslöv, Sweden.

In 2006, he began studying sculpture as a free student in the studio of Professor P. Wrona at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

Since then, his sculptural works have been showcased in solo and group exhibitions in Poland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Italy, Sweden, and the United States.

The central theme of Raf Tarnawski’s work is the woman. Initially, he employed classical techniques, working with clay, plaster, and bronze. Over time, he began experimenting with various materials such as string, glass, nylon, resin, and metal, developing his own techniques to achieve desired effects. Tarnawski uses a wide range of materials to convey the character of the figures he portrays.

He views art as a form of universal communication—a higher-level interaction grounded in aesthetics and beauty, the ethereal substance that underpins the universe and gives meaning to life.

Tarnawski considers his sculptures to be vessels filled with emotions and desires: the joy of a meeting, the warmth of a setting sun, or the longing for what could have been. Each work contains a fragment of himself, a piece of his life. His sculptures reflect subjective memories and experiences, capturing frozen moments and emotions. He invites viewers into a different dimension, free from the chaos of our fast-paced reality, offering a chance to rediscover harmony and regain perspective on the surrounding world.
